Justin Walts, Corey Lemelin, Kyle Smith, Steve Rockwood, By Lisa Pignatare June7, Westfield, Ma- On a steamy hot Saturday the Juniors kicked off the racing action. When the green flag flew it was the #38 of Anna Coons taking a slim lead over the nine kart field. Putting up the biggest challenge was Josh Wood in his R.A.D sponsored machine. Also trying to go for the lead was Justin Walts. Coons was able to hold off the hard charging Wood and Walts. By the half way mark in the race Coons had a good size lead with Walts in second. But only a few short laps later, Coons spun out and brought out the yellow flag. The new leader was Walts. When the race came to a close, it was Walts taking down his second win of the season. Rounding out the top five was Makayla Lucia-Perry, Dylan Dexter, Dylan Campbell, and Kara Franqueza. In the Novice competition karts it was Corey Lemelin in the #30 taking charge of the field. Trying to put a move on Lemelin was Dylan Irish in his Tony Stewart look-a-like kart. But Irish just couldn’t keep up with Lemelin’s blistering pace. During the race Lemelin wasted no time at pulling away from Irish and putting slower traffic down a lap. When the checkers flew it was Lemelin taking down his fourth consecutive win this season. The 10 kart pack that made up the Turquoise were out next. Taking a thin lead over the field was the #34 of Kate Lafreniere. Right on her tail though was the #3 of Ryan Irish. While those two battled, making his way quietly through the field was Kyle Smith. Smith was picking off karts lap by lap till he took the lead from Lafreniere. Rounding out the top five were Lafreniere, Irish, Cullen Pike and Alex Blanco. The Lite competition karts were out next. Jumping to a quick lead was the #01 of Steve Rockwood. With Rockwood taking such a quick lead, he left the rest of the field to battle for location. By half way the field had settled down to the point where they all were spread out on the track. When all was said and done it was Rockwood taking down the win. Finishing out the field was Scott Kalber, Will Coons and Gary Hublard. The Heavies qualified in the afternoon and ran their feature under the lights for double points. Taking command at the drop of the green was Jake Sapowsky in the #22 machine. Once in the lead Sapowsky walked away from the other eight karts. Sapowsky went on to take down the feature win. Rounding out the field was Justin Dube, Dan Murdzia, Tim Gallant, and Rich Dulac. Lastly like usual is the 2-Strokes. Taking an early was Don Wood in the #51. With Wood jumping to the lead, that left Josh Woollam, Ernie Whidden and Dan Card to battle for the second position. With those three battling, it made it easier for Wood to walk away from the field. When the checkered flag flew it was Wood taking down the feature win. Rounding out the field was Card, Woollam, and Whidden. |
