Father and Daughter Finish First and Second In Quad 4 Midgets at Whip City Speedway
By Mark McKeon

WESTFIELD, MA  May 24, 2008  Scott and Bethany Viets finished first and second in the postponed Quad 4 Midget feature race at Whip City Speedway on Saturday night and then came back to finish first and third in this week’s main event.
“This is something I’ve wanted for a long time,” proud poppa Scott Viets said after the 1-2 finish.  “I didn’t care if I won or if Bethany won, but I’ve dreamed about us finishing first and second ever since we started racing together.”
It was a night that favored veteran drivers who were able to find the right set-up.  Ryan Nicewicz dominated the Modified Lite ranks, winning both the postponed feature and this week’s feature.  In the held over event, he capitalized on his P-2 starting spot to get by polesitter Brian Peterson on lap 13.  In the second feature, he came all the way from a twelfth starting spot to take the lead on lap 8.
The 750cc Mini Sprint make-up feature saw a three car pile-up at the start in which Bill Adamsky got upside down.  He was uninjured. On the restart, John Virgilio took off like a rocket and soared to a solid success, his first since last season.  In this week’s 750cc feature, former track champ Kyle Spencer made his first winged Mini Sprint start since 2006 and demonstrated that he hadn’t forgotten the route to Victory Lane.  After finishing sixth in his SK Light at Stafford Motor Speedway the night before, Spencer returned to dirt roots and led from wire to wire, trailed by Joe Plant, Jay Haviland and hard charger Marc Guerard, who started 17th and finished 4th.
In the 1200cc Mini Sprint make-up feature, Justin Phillips finished first followed by Rich Wood, Jr. and Jon Moore. Not quite satisfied, Rich Wood, Jr. won the current week’s feature, followed by Marc Guerard who started sixth and Jon Moore who started tenth.
Kristen Phillips earned her first victory of the year by leading the held-over 750cc Sportsman feature from green to checker and rookie Charlie Pease performed the same feat in this week’s feature.
Neither the 270cc Mini Sprints nor the 600cc Mini Sprints had make-up features.
In the 270’s, Brooks Bennett captured his heat and then easily won his second feature of the season, besting Brian Boudreau by better than a straightaway.  Frank Russo was third, Zach Aszklar was fourth and last week’s winner Todd Bertrand came from twelfth to finish fifth.
Rich Crooker raided the cookie jar in the 600cc Mini Sprint feature by fending off a pair of challengers, first Paul Bigelow and later Sam Christie.  The 20 lap feature was slowed by but a single caution flag.  When the checkers flew, it was Crooker, Christie, Ricci Heath, Paul Bigelow and Luke Greenwood who recovered well from a heat race encounter with the second turn Armco barrier.
