Veteran and Two Neophytes win at Whip City Speedway

WESTFIELD, MA  June 14  There was nothing borrowed and nothing blue, but there was a veteran racer along with two teenagers in Mini Sprint victory lane at Whip City Speedway last Saturday night.  The rain shortened evening program saw three features completed and four others postponed until this coming Saturday, June 20.

Multi-time Mini Sprint and Modified Sportsman feature winner Jay Haviland of Amenia, NY won the 750cc Mini Sprint main by wheelstanding away from Peter Dance when the green flag dropped and leading from wire to wire. The race was slowed by only one caution flag and eleven of the twelve starters finished. Dance came home second and Mark Dupuis was third.  Haviland broomed the night by winning his heat.

Fifteen year old Brayton Rounds, III of Harrisville, RI led for only 2 laps of the 20 lap 270cc Mini Sprint feature, but they were the 2 most important laps of the event.  The Burrillville Middle School Student executed a daring inside pass coming to the white flag to score the sixth victory in his three season Mini sprint career.

“The car was fast all night and I didn’t have to make any changes during the race.  I knew I had the fastest car, it was just a matter of finding the right time and place to pass the cars ahead of me,” said Rounds, who started fourth.

Anthony Nocella of Woburn, MA won his second 600cc Mini Sprint feature of the season.  The Woburn High School Student led all 20 laps and cruised to an easy victory over Matt Seymour and Rich Crooker.

Bob Poloski of Granby, MA was leading the Modified Lite feature on the eighth lap, when the race was stopped because of rain.  He’ll lead the field to the green when the race restarts on Saturday.

Tyler Jackson of Milford, CT led all 20 laps in the feature and every lap but the first one in the heat to dominate the day in 250cc Youth Mini Sprints.  It was the third feature win of the year for Jackson, who was followed across the line by Jim Santa Maria and Tyler Chartrand.

The attrition began even before the green flagged dropped on 4 Cyl Street Stock feature and continued until the checkered flag flew, when only two cars were left running.  Ten cars were scheduled to start the Darwinian derby, but two failed to answer the call to the post.  An additional six cars dropped out during the race, either because of wrecks or because of mechanical issues.  At the end, Ed Banach of Westfield, MA defeated fellow townsman Jamie Beaudry.

The features for the 1200cc Mini Sprints, 750 Sportsman Mini Sprints and Quad 4 Midgets were postponed until next week.

Chris Haskell took a hard flip in a brand new stock 1000cc Bailey Mini Sprint during a 1200cc heat.  He was transported by ambulance to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield where he was treated and released.

Whip City Speedway offers two complete shows for one low admission every Saturday.  Competition Karts, and 250cc Youth Mini Sprints make up the afternoon program which gets underway at 12:30 pm.  Four Cylinder Street Stocks are added every other week.

The evening program starts at 5:00 pm and this Saturday June 20 will consist of heats and features for the 270cc, 600cc and 750cc Mini Sprints.  Double features and no heats will be run for the Modified Lites, Quad 4 Midgets, 750 Sportsman and 1200cc Mini Sprints.  Adult tickets are just $12 while kids 10 years and younger are just $3.  Parking is always free and Whip City Speedway is just a hop, skip and a Mini Sprint flip from both I-91 and I-90- The Mass Pike.  Check out our website at www.whipcityspeedway.com.
